Wartime Memories

About the Silicon Valley Reads Program

Students, friends, families, co-workers, neighbors, book lovers – literally all who live, work or learn in Silicon Valley – are invited to participate in the annual Silicon Valley Reads Month in February. Presented by the Santa Clara County Office of Education, the Santa Clara County Library and the San Jose Public Library Foundation, Silicon Valley Reads is designed to promote reading and literacy, broaden the exposure to and appreciation of good literature, and build community.

Throughout the month, public events (most free) are scheduled to spark discussion of the themes of the selected books. There are many opportunities to read and discuss the Silicon Valley Reads books at libraries, bookstores, community organizations, and businesses. Individual readers can also post their comments about the books and its themes on the Silicon Valley Reads website.

This is the fourth year of Silicon Valley Reads and participation continues to grow. In 2005, about 2,000 people attended Silicon Valley Reads events and thousands more read the book selection on their own.

Selection Criteria
Books selected for Silicon Valley Reads Month meet the following criteria:

  • Reflect universal issues relevant to Silicon Valley
  • Appeal to diverse audiences
  • Are appropriate for both adults and young adults
  • Are the work of a living author
