Wartime Memories

Information and Rules
Wartime Memories: Remembering World War II

In honor of the 2006 Silicon Valley Reads (SVR) book selections, "Souvenir" by Louise Steinman and "When the Emperor Was Divine" by Julie Otsuka, Santa Clara County community libraries in Campbell, Gilroy, Milpitas and Saratoga invite local residents and writers to share their memories of life during World War II. This was a time in U.S. history when the role of women dramatically changed on the home front and young people became adults on the battlegrounds of foreign lands. By sharing our life experiences, we learn how much we have in common with others. Entries for Wartime Memories may be submitted starting mid-January 2006. Closing dates for entries and dates for public readings will vary according to library. Click on one of the links below to learn more:

  1. Write about your own World War II experience on the home front or the front lines or interview a family member or local resident and write your impressions of their wartime experience.
  2. Your entry may be up to 1500 words in length.
  3. A maximum of three entries may be submitted by each individual.
  4. Your document may be submitted in one of the following ways:
    • Go to the SVR Discussion Board then select and open the Wartime Memories folder specifically for the Campbell, Gilroy, Milpitas or Saratoga Library. Click on the New Topic folder. Fill in your username, password, subject (title) in the boxes provided. Type in your story in the Message box. Make sure to include your contact info including at least name and email address. When you are done, click on the Post New Topic bar at the bottom.
    • Create your entry as a WORD document and save it on a CD or floppy formatted for PC and drop it by or mail it to the library. See the Wartime Memories Participating Libraries & Email Addresses.
    • Send your entry via email. Please include contact information including your name, address, and phone number. Send your entry as text in the body of your email message or as a Word document. See the Wartime Memories Participating Libraries & Email Addresses.
  5. Include your contact information on each story you submit including name and at least one of the following: address, telephone number, and/or email address.
  6. Entries must be received by due dates. See Wartime Memories Participating Libraries & Email Addresses for due dates.
