About the event

Compost is called “black gold.” There are two things good soil needs: nutrients and structure. Many conventional agriculture and horticulture methods provide nutrients but not the structure. Compost provides both, which is why the world-renowned organic farm at UC Santa Cruz calls compost the heart and soul of the garden.  This presentation will give an overview and details of composting, using several examples of methods (such as the three-bin and lasagna methods) and materials (such as soybean meal, leaves, etc.).  Retired Los Gatos High School agroecology teacher Les Kishler has taught sustainable gardening and agriculture methods for over 40 years and is the founder of the non-profit Community Gardens as Appleseeds.
